SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Tranquility of Communion
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents Tranquility of Communion\, a landmark exhibition of the late British-Nigerian photographer Rotimi Fani-Kayode’s work\, running from Feb. 28 to May 25\, 2025. This Canadian premiere brings together Fani-Kayode’s celebrated photographs alongside archival prints and previously unseen works from his student years. Fani-Kayode’s images treat same-sex\, multiracial love with a spiritual intensity\, employing symbolic language to explore themes of identity\, sexuality\, and race. Born into a prominent Nigerian family that emigrated to London in the 1960s in search of political refuge\, Fani-Kayode channeled his multifaceted identity and outsider status into a bold photographic practice that made him a prominent figure in the Black British art scene. His work left an enduring influence on contemporary art despite a career that was tragically cut short by his death in 1989\, at the age of 34. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Mother’s Day at Metropolis at Metrotown
DESCRIPTION:This Mother’s Day\, Metropolis at Metrotown invites moms\, mom figures\, and their families to discover the joys of Mother Nature! The Met’s annual “We Love Moms & Mother Nature” returns with an adventurous twist from April 18 to May 19\, 2025. From an indoor “glampsite” to the beloved Mother’s Day party in the Grand Court\, here are four ways you and your loved ones can join in the action at BC’s largest shopping centre. \nFrom April 18 until May 19\, go glamping – no preparation required. The heart of the Met’s Mother’s Day festivities is the Grand Court\, which will be transformed into an epic indoor glampsite. Supported by Decathlon – whose 38\,000-square-foot flagship store opened at the Met on April 27\, 2024\, the site encompasses a tropical tiki bar; a tented grassland bedroom; a camp-inspired kitchen; and a beachside games room. There’s also a faux campfire with s’mores on select weekends (April 26 & May 3)\, as well as spot-the-wildlife-themed games for both kids and adults. The glamping site will be closed on April 30 and May 10. \nFrom April 18 until May 19\, step into nature… indoors. Crafted by the creative minds at local design studio Lazy Wizard\, the Grand Court’s enchanting glampsite features a mountains-and-forest tableau with a whimsical hot air balloon suspended above. Enter through an inflatable tree and wander amid light-festooned trees and a charming campground. \nOn May 10 from 12 – 2pm\, encourage Mom to let loose at a party in her honour. Mothers work hard every day of the year – on Saturday\, May 10\, they can play! Kick off your Mother’s Day celebrations a day early at the Met’s ticketed bash\, which invites guests of all ages to a midday fête with music\, cocktails and wine\, and light canapes. Amusements include DIY s’mores\, woodland photo opportunities\, craftmaking\, and a door prize. Plus\, each adult will receive a gift bag to take home (complete with a Met $20 gift card). Tickets cost $40 per adult and $5 for kids aged 5-15 years; kids 4 and under are free. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Burnaby Family Life’s Women Driving Their Future program. Tickets are available online. \nStarting April 24\, shop for a $20 reward. Ahead of Mother’s Day\, visitors to the Met who spend $200 (before taxes) will get a $20 reward card – the perfect incentive to splash out on a memorable Mother’s Day gift! Plus\, the Met will donate $5 for each redemption (up to $5\,000) to the Burnaby Fire Department. Rewards are available until sold out! \nThe shopping centre is open Monday to Saturday\, 10am – 9pm\, and Sunday\, 11am – 7pm. SUMMARY:Restless by Nature: Mary Sui Yee Wong\, 1990s to the present
DESCRIPTION:Richmond Art Gallery presents Restless by Nature\, the first retrospective of multidisciplinary artist Mary Sui Yee Wong’s work\, on view from April 12 to June 8\, 2025. Wong’s artistic practice over three decades spans sculpture\, installation\, photography\, video\, and costume\, and works in this exhibition have been specially updated for this new context–reflecting the site-specificity that Wong is known for. A newly commissioned performance-based work\, Gold Mountain\, draws from the rising levels of anti-Asian violence seen in recent years\, and will use an act of destruction to explore systemic racism as driven by the neoliberal economy. Born in Hong Kong to Cantonese opera master Toa Wong and raised in Vancouver\, the artist frequently addresses themes of personal memory\, familial legacy\, and cultural history in her work. Based in Montréal\, Wong is a professor in Concordia University’s Fine Arts department\, an advocate for the Chinese Canadian community\, and a celebrated mentor of younger generations of Asian diaspora artists. A collaboration between the Gallery\, City of Richmond Public Art\, and Capture Photography Festival\, her work TREASURE II\, which honours her Chinese cultural and artistic heritage\, will be featured at Lansdowne Station. \nThis exhibition is part of the 2025 Capture Photography Festival Selected Exhibition Program. \nAdmission to the Richmond Art Gallery is free. Donations are appreciated.
