SUMMARY:Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act
DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre will open “Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act”\, a new special exhibit dedicated to honouring the multigenerational families who pursued their dreams and turned grievances into success. \nThe exhibit shares the lesser-known stories of families with ancestors who lived through the period of exclusion (1923-1947) and the living descendants making their mark in diverse professions. In selecting the stories\, the CSC spotlights ordinary people who are making an important impact in our community today\, including teachers\, doctors\, athletes\, artists\, and community organizers. The majority of the families have a connection to Vancouver’s Chinatown\, the vibrant intersection point of their extraordinary stories reflecting diverse occupations and backgrounds.

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Nature: Paintings by Alex Ji
DESCRIPTION:THE BEAUTY OF NATURE – PAINTINGS BY ALEX JI \nOpening: Tuesday March 12\, 2024 7-9pm \nExhibition: March 12 – April 10\, 2024\nMonday – Friday 10am-5pm\, Tuesdays until 8pm\, closed on holidays. \nIn recent years\, immigrant artists have significantly enriched Canada’s art scene with their high-quality works. Lipont Gallery is proud to present nearly twenty recent paintings by Alex Ji\, showcasing his unique perspective on the natural beauty of the Greater Vancouver area and beyond. The works are landscape sketches and oil paintings by Ji during the two years he has been living in Canada. They depict the beautiful natural scenery of various regions around the world\, mainly the scenery of the Greater Vancouver area. \nAn accomplished oil painter\, Alex Ji holds degrees from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts\, where he studied under the renowned artist Professor Yu Xiaodong. With a rich history of international exhibitions and accolades\, Ji has become a celebrated figure in the Metro Vancouver art scene\, known for his realistic yet emotionally charged landscapes. Over the years\, he has participated in art exhibitions held in different countries\, and his works have been published in different publications and collected by collectors. To date\, he has held four solo exhibitions in Metro Vancouver. Since moving to Canada in 2022\, Ji has set up his art studios in Richmond and West Vancouver\, and continues to create with a broader vision and deeper emotions\, bringing his artistic works to a higher level. His works are known for his superb realistic skills and unique artistic perspective. Through careful depiction of details and clever use of colours\, he captures the rich and diverse beauty of nature and displays it on canvas in a deeply touching way. \n“I always adhere to a pure and sincere view of painting. I love to use concrete and realistic painting methods to convey my emotions. In my opinion\, only reality can express my deep love for nature more intuitively. At the same time\, art needs to be expressive\, to touch people’s hearts. Therefore\, in my paintings\, I will strengthen the abstract expression of aesthetic elements\, such as primary and secondary virtuality and reality\, density and concentration\, dry and wet staining\, thin and thick covering\, etc. Such processing not only gives the work a sense of beauty and can convey my emotions more strongly. I particularly enjoy painting Plein Air\, having a dialogue with nature\, and immersing my body and mind in it. Nature is changeable\, it can be quiet and harmonious\, or passionate. Whenever I feel the moment when the scene blends\, it will inspire me. This is the biggest motivation for my creation.” \nIn this exhibition\, the work Echoes of Peace\, which was selected for the 2023 Federation of Canadian Artists Exhibition\, is the highlight of the exhibition. This painting captures a serene landscape with masterful detail and colour\, reflecting nature’s subtle dynamism. Through the control of details and the use of colour expresses the rich and subtle changes in nature\, forming a harmonious natural symphony. The work Pastoral depicts an intoxicating pastoral\, with blue sky and white clouds intertwining in the sky\, and sheep coming from afar\, as if the beautiful pastoral music is purifying our souls. \nFree parking.\nTransit: Canada Line Aberdeen Station \nwww.lipontgallery.ca\nwww.facebook.com/lipontgallery/\nwww.instagram.com/lipontgallery/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuuHgBkttf-fpT_vVAtouqA

SUMMARY:This Is How We Got Here
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall is proud to produce and present Keith Barker’s This Is How We Got Here from Saturday\, April 13 to Sunday\, April 28. \nSimultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming\, This Is How We Got Here follows a close-knit family still dealing with the lingering trauma of an unexpected loss. A mother\, father\, aunt\, and uncle must learn how to move forward after their shared grief as they re-learn how to interact with one another through humour\, forgiveness\, and love. \nIt has been a year since Paul and Lucille’s son Craig died by suicide\, and their once-solid family bonds are starting to break down. While the now-separated couple tries to honour their son\, Lucille’s sister Liset and her husband Jim refuse to discuss their nephew. The ties that keep the four together as sisters\, best friends\, and spouses are strained by grief and guilt… until a visit from a fox changes everything. \n“When my eye caught the cover of this newly published play in 2017\, I felt compelled to read it as I had recently had a ‘fox’ experience\, different from this but also very meaningful\,” says Firehall Arts Centre’s Artistic Producer\, Donna Spencer. “Once I started to read it\, I knew it was a play for Firehall audiences\, and I appreciated how Keith had shaped this powerful story\, blending humour with grief\, friendship with raw pain\, and the power of the natural world.” \nKeith Barker is a member of the Métis Nation of Ontario. He is a playwright\, actor\, and director from Northwestern Ontario. Keith is also the Director of the Foerster Bernstein New Play Development Program at the Stratford Festival\, and the former Artistic Director at Native Earth Performing Arts in Toronto. He is the recipient of the Dora Mavor Moore Award and the Playwrights Guild’s Carol Bolt Award for Best New Play. Keith received a Saskatchewan and Area Theatre Award for Excellence in Playwriting for his play\, The Hours That Remain\, as well as a Yukon Arts Award for Best Art for Social Change. He was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for English Drama for This Is How We Got Here.

SUMMARY:Over the Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Massey Theatre is pleased to present the world premiere of Over the Ridge on Saturday\, April 13 at 4:00pm and 8:00pm. Ticket prices are $45 – $50 (plus applicable fees and service charges)\, and are available online at www.ticketsnw.ca or by phone at 604.521.5050. \nIn 2020\, Vancouver acoustic folk-roots group The Fugitives released Ridge\, a musical storytelling film that examined the WWI Canadian soldier experience during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. It was named a Top 10 Arts Event of the Year by The Globe and Mail\, and spawned the JUNO-nominated album Trench Songs. \nIn this world premiere of Over the Ridge\, The Fugitives – headed by songwriters Brendan McLeod and Adrian Glynn along with Christopher Suen (banjo) and Carly Frey (violin) – collaborate with choreographer and Ballet BC dancer Jacob Williams to expand this narrative through dance. Over the Ridge explores the misconceptions and offers reflections on the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The story is told through direct address\, historical readings\, dance\, and new re-imaginings of the songs WWI soldiers wrote in the trenches. \n“As soon as we started workshopping this and I saw Jacob’s incredible choreography and the dancers’ fantastic interpretation\, I realized this was a good way of giving voice to over 20\,000 WWI Canadian soldiers who were underage\,” says McLeod. “Their youth is embodied on stage in a way that is both literal enough to understand and abstract enough to be aesthetically compelling.” \nDeveloped in partnership with the Massey Theatre Society\, with help from Ballet BC and Arts Umbrella\, Over the Ridge adds original contemporary dance to storytelling\, spoken word and live music\, resulting in a kinetic ride through history that delves into our strong connection to the past and passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives. \nMassey Theatre’s Executive Director Jessica Schneider says\, “We are so eager to witness Ridge transform into Over the Ridge. Seeing artists dream bigger and push further in their vision for their work is deeply inspiring. We can’t wait to share this world premiere with you.”

SUMMARY:You used to call me Marie
DESCRIPTION:Experience the premiere of this new work by Jessie Award-winning playwright\, Tai Amy Grauman\, inspired by the stories of Métis women in her family (the Callihoos). Produced by Savage Society. \nWe follow Iskwewo\, Napew\, and Mistatim through eight intertwined stories of love\, loss\, and the fight of the Métis people as the Métis nations emerge across the plains amidst the fur trade’s robust colonization. As we experience the love stories shared by the Callihoos\, through the political uprisings of the 1930s and into the present day\, we witness their struggle to protect their people and celebrate their resilient sovereignty as Métis women.
