SUMMARY:Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act
DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre will open “Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act”\, a new special exhibit dedicated to honouring the multigenerational families who pursued their dreams and turned grievances into success. \nThe exhibit shares the lesser-known stories of families with ancestors who lived through the period of exclusion (1923-1947) and the living descendants making their mark in diverse professions. In selecting the stories\, the CSC spotlights ordinary people who are making an important impact in our community today\, including teachers\, doctors\, athletes\, artists\, and community organizers. The majority of the families have a connection to Vancouver’s Chinatown\, the vibrant intersection point of their extraordinary stories reflecting diverse occupations and backgrounds.

SUMMARY:From Slander’s Brand
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents From Slander’s Brand from Nov. 10\, 2023–Feb. 4\, 2024\, an exhibition bringing together three monumental works by Hannah Darabi\, Rachel Khedoori\, and Ron Terada. In response to transformational historical periods — the 1979 Iranian Revolution\, the Iraq War of 2003\, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic — each artist asks how art acts as a witness\, interlocutor\, and critical reflector on pivotal moments of historical trauma and transformation. The artworks employ language found in books\, newspapers\, and websites to create a new kind of “picture” of each of these momentous periods. \nAdmission is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group. \nPhoto credit: Ron Terada\, TL;DR\, 2020–2022. SUMMARY:Shield Maiden
DESCRIPTION:Funny. Sexy. Fierce. Unapologetic! Anvil Theatre is thrilled to present Shield Maiden on Saturday\, December 16 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. This presentation will be performed alongside an ASL interpreter. \nImagine a 10th century Viking TED Talk on what it means to be a Viking warrior woman. As Garrison Commander Ingrid Larsdottir comedically endeavours to engage new recruits\, she inadvertently reveals her own tragic and violent personal history. Watching her struggle with her trauma is unsettling. Witnessing her tap into her inner strength is inspiring. Ingrid’s clarion call for equality and new recruits prevails! She empowers women to reclaim the warrior archetype in our modern world. \nWritten and performed by Melanie Teichroeb\, this modern feminist story uses a character from the past to expose the reality that not enough has changed in the treatment of women since the time of Vikings…one thousand years ago. Shield Maiden challenges untruths about women and gendered expectations\, and is based on a historical character who history hellishly gaslighted. \nTickets range in price from $36.50 to $46.50 and are available online at www.ticketsnw.ca or by phone at 604.521.5050.

SUMMARY:Bannock Bake Sale
DESCRIPTION:Jillian\, founder of The Métis Bannock Queen\, grew up in Fort McMurray\, Treaty 8\, a First Nation territory in northwestern Canada. Till today\, she reminisces about eating her grandfather’s bannock straight out of the oven\, covered with jam\, butter and honey. \nWhen Jillian first moved to Vancouver eighteen years ago\, her mother gave her a recipe book. Inside it were notes and recipes handwritten by her grandfather. Amongst the pages was his personal recipe for bannock. While her grandfather passed away in 2019\, Jillian still uses his recipes to carry on that legacy. Today\, she experiments with a variety of flavour combinations\, with many seasonal options such as fresh berries in the summer and cinnamon and apples in the fall. \nJillian initially started making bannocks during the pandemic as a way of fundraising for the not-for-profits in the lower mainland. It was her way of giving back to the community and sharing a piece of her Métis culture through her grandfather’s legacy. This was the inception of The Métis Bannock Queen. \nEvent Dates and Times:\nSunday\, November 19th\, 2023\n11:00 AM – 3:00 PM \nSaturday\, December 23\, 2023\n11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
