SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Greg Girard
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents the first major institutional survey of Greg Girard\, one of Canada’s most influential contemporary photographers\, from July 10–Oct. 25\, 2026. The exhibition presents more than 160 photographs spanning the past half century\, including never-before-seen outtakes from his iconic photobooks\, and traces his evolution as an artist. The show unfolds chronologically beginning with some of the earliest images Girard took as a teenager in 1970s Vancouver. The exhibition then follows his footsteps as he traveled down the West Coast and beyond\, landing as a freelance journalist in Asia and contributing to publications like Time Magazine where he was oftentimes at the front line of civil unrest and conflict. Followers of Girard’s work will recognize images from the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City and Shanghai — and will discover that in addition to his urban landscapes\, he has a mastery of portraiture. The exhibition provides a sense of how he moved through the world\, and ends on his most recent photographs as he revisits the subject of the Lower Mainland\, with shots of North Vancouver and Surrey included. The exhibition will open simultaneously as the launch of his new publication Greg Girard – Photographs 1972–2026. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group. \n101 Carrie Cates Court\, North Vancouver\, V7M 3J4\nGallery hours Wednesday\, 10am–5pm; Thursday\, 10am–9pm; Friday–Sunday\,\n10am–5pm \nImage: Greg Girard\, Camaro in Alley\, 1981

SUMMARY:Spying on America: A Book Launch with Bill Gaston
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a warm and funny evening with Bill Gaston\, author of the new “fascinating road trip” book\, Spying on America. Will Ferguson describes it as “a journey through the looking glass into that torqued version of Canada we call the United States.” \nOn a June morning in 2022\, Bill Gaston drives off the Victoria–Port Angeles ferry in a rented Dodge Charger with his two sons. Born in the U.S. but “Canadian through and through\,” Gaston is on a road trip to Tabor\, Iowa\, the town founded by his great\, great\, great-grandparents as the westernmost hub of the Underground Railroad. \nThe Gastons’ 11-day trip to Tabor and back takes them up and down and across a swathe of rural red states. Motivated equally by a curiosity to find out what really makes Americans tick and the motto ya gotta stop\, the Gastons explore the American west\, navigate unmapped dirt roads\, eat too many French fries\, overnight in clapped-out motels\, visit a Buddhist mountain monastery\, marvel at spectacular landforms\, and enjoy unlikely conversations with real Americans. \nBoth a sideways glance at contemporary American culture and a mordant yet tender account of the true meaning of ancestry\, Spying on America is an unpredictably insightful exploration of family\, Canada’s neighbour\, and the “American bald ego.” \nThis event is free\, but please register here as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing!

SUMMARY:Pippin the Musical
DESCRIPTION:Step into a world of ‘spectacle and unease’ with Play On Words Productions’ gritty reimagining of Stephen Schwartz’ Pippin\, February 26th-March 7th at the Jericho Arts Centre \nSet inside a decaying nightclub suspended between life and death\, Pippin is the story of one young man’s search for the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of battle\, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power. Dark\, raw\, and reckless\, this production is a haunting exploration of purpose and desire\, leaving the audience to wonder: would they choose the fire\, or walk away? \nCONTENT ADVISORY: This show includes mature themes\, sexual suggestion\, dramatized violence\, and sensory elements (lighting and sound). We recommend only those who 13+ attend. Viewer discretion is advised.
