SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Greg Girard
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents the first major institutional survey of Greg Girard\, one of Canada’s most influential contemporary photographers\, from July 10–Oct. 25\, 2026. The exhibition presents more than 160 photographs spanning the past half century\, including never-before-seen outtakes from his iconic photobooks\, and traces his evolution as an artist. The show unfolds chronologically beginning with some of the earliest images Girard took as a teenager in 1970s Vancouver. The exhibition then follows his footsteps as he traveled down the West Coast and beyond\, landing as a freelance journalist in Asia and contributing to publications like Time Magazine where he was oftentimes at the front line of civil unrest and conflict. Followers of Girard’s work will recognize images from the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City and Shanghai — and will discover that in addition to his urban landscapes\, he has a mastery of portraiture. The exhibition provides a sense of how he moved through the world\, and ends on his most recent photographs as he revisits the subject of the Lower Mainland\, with shots of North Vancouver and Surrey included. The exhibition will open simultaneously as the launch of his new publication Greg Girard – Photographs 1972–2026. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group. \n101 Carrie Cates Court\, North Vancouver\, V7M 3J4\nGallery hours Wednesday\, 10am–5pm; Thursday\, 10am–9pm; Friday–Sunday\,\n10am–5pm \nImage: Greg Girard\, Camaro in Alley\, 1981

SUMMARY:Pippin the Musical
DESCRIPTION:Step into a world of ‘spectacle and unease’ with Play On Words Productions’ gritty reimagining of Stephen Schwartz’ Pippin\, February 26th-March 7th at the Jericho Arts Centre \nSet inside a decaying nightclub suspended between life and death\, Pippin is the story of one young man’s search for the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of battle\, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power. Dark\, raw\, and reckless\, this production is a haunting exploration of purpose and desire\, leaving the audience to wonder: would they choose the fire\, or walk away? \nCONTENT ADVISORY: This show includes mature themes\, sexual suggestion\, dramatized violence\, and sensory elements (lighting and sound). We recommend only those who 13+ attend. Viewer discretion is advised.

SUMMARY:Gala to Change the Cancer Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Every two minutes\, someone in Canada receives a cancer diagnosis. While conventional medicine fights the disease\, patients frequently feel like a number in a fragmented system. Many turn to evidence-based integrative oncology to survive brutal treatment side effects\, but high costs force vulnerable families to choose between financial ruin or suffering in silence. \nThe Parmar Foundation is stepping into this divide to change the conversation. \nJoin us on Saturday\, October 3rd\, 2026\, at the Morgan Creek Golf Course in South Surrey for an elegant evening of community\, purpose\, and hope. Founded by integrative oncology pioneers Dr. Gurdev and Karen Parmar\, the foundation bridges the medical gap. \nAll proceeds directly fund: \nThe Patient Access Program: Fully subsidizing supportive\, whole-person cancer care for low-income BC families. \nClinical Research: Funding academic trials to prove how conventional and naturopathic systems can safely work together. \nEnjoy an exceptional dinner and live charity auctions. Help us ensure whole-person survival is a transparent right for everyone—not a luxury or a secret.

SUMMARY:Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor: End Times Fascism and The Fight for the Living World
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an essential conversation with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor as they discuss their forthcoming book\, END TIMES FASCISM – And the Fight for the Living World. \nAcross politics\, technology\, and culture\, a powerful narrative is taking hold: that ecological collapse\, social breakdown\, and mass instability are inevitable. Klein and Taylor examine how this fatalism is shaping a worldview in which elites prepare for survival while abandoning collective responsibility. From fortified enclaves to fantasies of off-world escape\, they trace how fear of the future is being harnessed to justify inequality\, exclusion\, and authoritarianism. \nBut this apocalyptic thinking\, despite tech-bro billionaire and Christian fundamentalist insistence\, can be rejected. Klein and Taylor offer a sharp and necessary framework for understanding this moment and how to fight it. With clarity and urgency\, they challenge us to deny the pervasive belief in impending doom\, defend human dignity\, and imagine futures rooted in collective care\, solidarity\, and hope that change is possible. \nNaomi Klein is an award-winning journalist\, bestselling author of Doppelganger\, No Logo\, and The Shock Doctrine. At the University of British Columbia\, she is founding Co-Director of the Centre for Climate Justice and Associate Professor in the Department of Geography. \nAstra Taylor is an award-winning writer\, activist\, and documentarian\, and a cofounder of the Debt Collective. She is the author of The People’s Platform\, which won the American Book Award; Democracy May Not Exist\, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone; and The Age of Insecurity. \nCo-presented with the UBC Centre for Climate Justice and Knopf Canada

SUMMARY:Avery Raquel ~ 2026 Slow Motion Tour
DESCRIPTION:Ocean Entertainment Worldwide\, in association with A.J.E. Global Productions\, presents eight limited engagement concerts starring Canada’s Avery Raquel ~ Live in Concert. \nWitness the evolution of one of Canada’s most formidable young musical forces. At just 24 years old\, Billboard-charting recording artist and multi-instrumentalist Avery Raquel takes the stage for a mesmerizing live experience that redefines the boundaries of modern soul. \nThe Slow Motion Tour is a brilliant collision of musical eras. Backed by an elite and accomplished band\, Avery seamlessly weaves her deep roots in classic jazz with the sultry\, atmospheric textures of contemporary R&B and alternative soul. Having recently returned from Europe after earning her master’s degree from Berklee College of Music\, Avery brings a fierce\, refined musicianship to the stage. Her multi-octave range—praised as “lustrous\, precise\, and luminously powerful”—commands the room from the very first note\, effortlessly shifting from a whisper to a soaring\, emotive roar. \nThis is a night of honest\, vulnerable storytelling packaged in infectious hooks\, lush live arrangements\, and undeniable Canadian talent. The performance is meticulously paced to highlight Avery’s journey from jazz prodigy to contemporary R&B innovator. \nWith an intimate\, late-night jazz club energy feel\, Avery demonstrates her multi-instrumental prowess\, trading off between the piano and guitar. This show features jazz-tinged\, stripped-back arrangements of her earlier discography\, alongside smoky\, neo-soul-inspired new material. \nThroughout the entire concert the energy builds as her full band takes over\, diving into the heart of her celebrated self-titled album. Audiences will experience live\, driving renditions of fan favorites like “Helpless”\, “Please\,” “You”\, and ‘Nothing More”\, alongside the critically acclaimed tracks that swept the John Lennon Songwriting Competition. \nThe show culminates in a wave of lush\, modern\, ambient grooves. Showcasing her newest material—including “Hard To Stay”\, “The Letter”\, and tracks from her Slow Motion EP—Avery leans into atmospheric 80s\, rich vocal harmonies\, and irresistible\, deep R&B pockets that keep the crowd moving. \nAvery Raquel has been captivating audiences professionally for over a decade\, but this tour marks a profound “rebirth” of her artistry. She possesses a rare\, magnetic ability to make a large performing arts center feel like a tight-knit\, emotional sanctuary. For anyone who loves the timeless depth of Amy Winehouse\, the vocal precision of jazz greats\, and the fresh\, current edge of modern R&B\, this concert is a masterclass in what the future of soul music sounds like. \nTwo exclusive performances only. – Show 1: 6:30 pm | Show 2: 9:00 pm\nLive at the Revue Stage (Granville Island)\nTickets $44 (all Seats) – General Admission\nVisit: www.oceanentworldwide.com to purchase \n

SUMMARY:Kelsey Lu
DESCRIPTION:Cellist\, vocalist\, and composer Kelsey Lu performs at the Chan Centre in support of So Help Me God\, their first album in seven years. \nFollowing the lush\, orchestral landscapes of their acclaimed debut Blood\, Lu’s latest work is a powerful meditation on transformation\, devotion\, grief\, and self-discovery—or what they call “a reckoning.” Their “graceful and athletic” (Stereogum) vocals blend with haunting cello\, distorted guitars\, and choral swells to create a striking interplay of light and shadow: a Caravaggio painting brought to life in sound. \nBetween Blood and So Help Me God\, Lu remained busy\, composing scores for Netflix’s award-winning documentary Daughters and A24’s BAFTA-winning Earth Mama. They also collaborated with artists including Yves Tumor\, Debbie Harry\, and Jamie xx\, while partnering with leading fashion houses such as Miu Miu and Gucci. \nSome artistic journeys are worth the wait. SUMMARY:Julian Lage Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation and “one of the highest category of improvising musicians\,” (The New Yorker) Julian Lage has spent decades exploring the many strains of American music with boundless curiosity and technical mastery. With roots tangled up in jazz\, folk\, classical\, and country music\, Lage brings what The New York Times calls “a disarming spirit of generosity” to his playing\, approaching tradition as an open field for invention. \nA lifelong musician\, Lage emerged early as a singular talent. He learned the guitar at age five and was already playing onstage with Carlos Santana at eight. That same year\, he was the subject of the short documentary Jules at Eight\, showcasing his prodigious talents\, performed for the Grammy Awards as a preteen\, and later joined Gary Burton’s quartet at just 16. Rather than resting on early acclaim\, Lage has continually evolved\, recording widely as a leader and collaborating with artists including John Zorn\, Fred Hersch\, Nels Cline\, and Chris Eldridge. \nFor this concert\, he performs music from his newest album Scenes from Above\, with bassist Jorge Roeder\, drummer Kenny Wollesen\, and renowned keyboardist John Medeski. Though conceptualized by Lage\, Scenes from Above is not about him as bandleader. Instead\, he is firmly rooted as a band member within the quartet\, resulting in nine tracks that frame a brilliantly open experience. The four dazzling players give and take space in equal measure as they explore these songs in one space\, in real time. \nWitness the genius of Julian Lage live in Vancouver for an unforgettable experience. \nThis event is co-presented with Infidels Jazz as part of the VANJAZZ ’26 Jazz Festival

SUMMARY:An Evening with Zadie Smith
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating conversation with Zadie Smith\, one of the most prolific writers of her generation\, whose work has helped shape the literary landscape for over two decades. \nTwo of Smith’s novels\, White Teeth and NW\, have been named among the best books of the 21st century by the New York Times and Kirkus\, the former published when she was just 24. Her latest novel\, The Fraud\, was named Best Book of 2023 by both the New Yorker and Publishers Weekly\, while Dead and Alive\, her most recent collection of essays\, was included on TIME’s list of must-read books of 2025. Whether writing on class\, race\, culture\, art\, or politics\, Smith captivates readers around the world with her singular voice. \nSmith’s novels have won major awards including the Commonwealth Writers Prize\, Jewish Quarterly Wingate Prize\, and Orange Prize\, among others\, while her play The Wife of Willesden won a Critics’ Circle Theatre Award. She has been honoured with the Langston Hughes Medal\, the St. Louis Literary Award\, and the Bodley Medal. \nPraised for her “boisterous narrative intelligence; ear for dialogue; [and] chronic absence of boring sentences\,” (The Guardian) few writers are as consistently dazzling as Smith. Don’t miss this intimate evening with one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary literature.

SUMMARY:Palace
DESCRIPTION:Palace have been making music together for over a decade. What started out as carefree jam sessions between Leo Wyndham\, Rupert Turner and Matt Hodges in an airless studio in North London established a DIY ethos that remains intrinsic to the spirit of the band to this day. \nIn early 2025\, Palace took a career leap releasing the Greyhound EP on their own label\, Palace Presents – a collective they’d started in 2016 as a monthly night at The George Tavern in East London\, which had quietly grown into something more intentional. A positive and protected space as Leo described it\, away from the usual constraints of the music industry. \n“Kid” was released in April 2026\, together with the announcement of a 30-date tour of the USA and Canada in the Fall of 2026\, culminating in a show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. \n“Kid is about longing for a child an ocean away. It’s the ache we feel for our people when we’re separated from them. It doesn’t feel like a sadness or heaviness\, but more an affirmation of that love\, a primal release sung into the sunset as the road flies by.” \nJoin us for Palace’s Chan Centre debut and experience their immersive sound brought to life on our stage.
