SUMMARY:LiterASIAN 2025: Origins
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 LiterASIAN Festival arrives with the theme of “Origins\,” an exploration of heritage and resilience that reflects two significant milestones: the 30th anniversary of the Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop (ACWW) and the recent centennial of the Chinese Exclusion Act. This year’s theme is particularly poignant as it connects ACWW’s decades-long commitment to amplifying Asian Canadian voices with a critical period in history\, when the voices and presence of Chinese Canadians were institutionally silenced. Through this fusion of past and present\, the festival will encourage a renewed appreciation of identity\, cultural preservation\, and creative empowerment in today’s Asian Canadian literary scene. \nThe ACWW’s 30th anniversary serves as a reflection of its journey from a small but passionate collective of writers into a leading organization that advocates for Asian Canadian literature. To honour this legacy\, LiterASIAN 2025 will feature retrospectives and discussions that explore the evolution of Asian Canadian literature over the past three decades\, tracing how community-led efforts have influenced broader Canadian literary landscapes. \nThe theme of “Origins” takes on an even deeper meaning in light of the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act\, which banned most Chinese immigration to Canada from 1923 to 1947 and had lasting repercussions on Chinese Canadian communities. Through panels\, exhibits\, and creative performances\, LiterASIAN revisits the stories of those affected by the Exclusion Act\, showcasing how this dark chapter of exclusion has shaped—and\, in many ways\, strengthened—the determination of later generations to claim their rightful place within Canadian society and culture. \nThis year’s featured authors include award-winning writer and curator Catherine Clement (Paper Trail)\, Rachel Phan (Restaurant Kid)\, Eddy Boudel Tan (The Tiger and the Cosmonaut)\, and JF Garrard (Ghost Bride of Gum San)\, Wayne Ng (Johnny Delivers)\, Leanne Toshiko Simpson (Never Been Better)\, and Mai Nguyen (Sunshine Nails). Festival events include panel discussions\, author talks\, writing workshops\, and book launches\, including Ricepaper’s new anthology Infusion\, featuring new and emerging writers. \nLiterASIAN will take place in Toronto and Vancouver\, where stories of origins\, geography\, and journeys intertwine. Events will be held at the Chinese Canadian Museum\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre\, Centre A (Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art)\, the UBC Learning Exchange\, and the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library on the University of Toronto’s downtown campus. \nTickets go on sale May 1\, 2025 and are available for purchase online at http://literasian.com

SUMMARY:High Tide | Cancer Season: Creative Workshop + Sound Bath
DESCRIPTION:A creative workshop and sound bath hosted by Low Tide / High Tide — a pop-up series by artist Mega McGrath\, designed to help you reconnect with your creative vision\, clear blocks\, and sync with the natural cycles that shape the world around us. Featuring certified sound practitioner and channeler\, May Globus. \nAn evening of meditation\, sound healing\, and creative workshopping \nWe use astrology as a mythological framework (drawing on archetypes for theme and timing) while grounding the experience in psychology\, meditation\, and somatic nervous system work. The goal is to activate the parasympathetic state where clarity can emerge and change becomes possible. \nWe’ll work with the energy of the Full Moon in Capricorn (taking place just 3 days after High Tide!) to sync with the earth’s natural rhythm and help you release what’s no longer working; identify old habits\, creative blocks\, and outdated structures. \nYou’ll also receive a printout of Mega’s Three Month Worry Cleanse—a simple 90-day tool to help shift your relationship with time\, discipline\, and self-worth. We close the evening with a 20-minute sound bath to help the work settle into the body. Using crystal bowls and healing frequencies\, the sound helps integrate your insights and restore balance. \nWho is this for? Creatives\, entrepreneurs\, artists\, aspiring artists\, and those seeking a deeper connection with themselves\, their work\, and the world around them.

SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Star Witnesses
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents Star Witnesses\, a group exhibition by Monika Szewczyk that assembles works by a constellation of renowned artists whose insightful observations of the cosmos bring new understandings of exploratory and migratory movements on Planet Earth. The title gestures toward each artist’s precise vision\, honed at the technical limits of photography\, and hints at how their work can turn viewers into powerful witnesses in turn. The found and newly produced images take inspiration from the skies while giving substance to vital\, human histories: one woman’s survival in an internment camp; one man’s narrow escape from a white mob; underexposed connections between a war in the Middle East and peace in a mid-sized German town; an artist’s moment of grace on top a moonlit mountain\, far from home. Each work offers the image of the cosmos as material evidence for a distinctive perspective\, worldview\, or imaginary — together\, they attest to the fact that there is no universal way of gazing at the universe. The exhibition features Daniel Boyd\, Vija Celmins\, David Horvitz\, Bouchra Khalili\, Judy Radul\, Thomas Ruff\, Urban Subjects (Sabine Bitter\, Jeff Derksen\, and Helmut Weber)\, Carrie Mae Weems\, and Paul Wong. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.
