SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Tranquility of Communion
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents Tranquility of Communion\, a landmark exhibition of the late British-Nigerian photographer Rotimi Fani-Kayode’s work\, running from Feb. 28 to May 25\, 2025. This Canadian premiere brings together Fani-Kayode’s celebrated photographs alongside archival prints and previously unseen works from his student years. Fani-Kayode’s images treat same-sex\, multiracial love with a spiritual intensity\, employing symbolic language to explore themes of identity\, sexuality\, and race. Born into a prominent Nigerian family that emigrated to London in the 1960s in search of political refuge\, Fani-Kayode channeled his multifaceted identity and outsider status into a bold photographic practice that made him a prominent figure in the Black British art scene. His work left an enduring influence on contemporary art despite a career that was tragically cut short by his death in 1989\, at the age of 34. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

Wong’s artistic practice over three decades spans sculpture\, installation\, photography\, video\, and costume\, and works in this exhibition have been specially updated for this new context–reflecting the site-specificity that Wong is known for. A newly commissioned performance-based work\, Gold Mountain\, draws from the rising levels of anti-Asian violence seen in recent years\, and will use an act of destruction to explore systemic racism as driven by the neoliberal economy. Born in Hong Kong to Cantonese opera master Toa Wong and raised in Vancouver\, the artist frequently addresses themes of personal memory\, familial legacy\, and cultural history in her work. Based in Montréal\, Wong is a professor in Concordia University’s Fine Arts department\, an advocate for the Chinese Canadian community\, and a celebrated mentor of younger generations of Asian diaspora artists. A collaboration between the Gallery\, City of Richmond Public Art\, and Capture Photography Festival\, her work TREASURE II\, which honours her Chinese cultural and artistic heritage\, will be featured at Lansdowne Station. \nThis exhibition is part of the 2025 Capture Photography Festival Selected Exhibition Program. \nAdmission to the Richmond Art Gallery is free. Donations are appreciated.

SUMMARY:VIFF Live | Biboye Onanuga Plays Monk + Thelonious Monk: Straight\, No Chaser Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the VIFF stage\, Biboye Onanuga\, presents: ’The Music of Monk’. The Edmonton-based drummer is joined by an iconoclastic ensemble of Vancouver musicians Quincy Mayes (piano)\, Jodi Proznick (bass)\, and John Nicholson (tenor) for an evening of Monk tunes and arrangements before the 1988 documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight\, No Chaser. \n“The key to swing jazz is to swing it.” Monk’s words are often top of mind when I play this music — “Jazz”. One of the beautiful things about this musical tradition is the ability for an individual’s essence to unravel through their playing. Their touch\, feel\, interpretations\, etc . . . they reveal a person. And while technical skill and ability may be heard\, “a genius is the one most like himself” (Monk) — their sound is felt. I am inspired by the players who seek to earnestly express themselves through the medium of music. Monk may have been the greatest of these. So we celebrate him and his contributions the best way we know how – through the music that was uniquely his own. — Biboye Onanuga \nBiboye Onanuga is a British-born\, Nigerian-Canadian drummer\, and imaginative composer. Steeped in the arts scene since high-school\, he quickly became a sought-after player – recently completing his music degree at MacEwan University and already joining nationally-recognized players such as Jim Head\, Rubim DeToledo\, Mboya Nicholson to name a few. Biboye has made meaningful contributions to his local scene through his instrumental hip-hop/jazz band (Good information)\, 3-year-tenure weekly music series (New Standards) and recent Sunday Jazz series (Daze Days). \nAbout Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser\nCharlotte Zwerin’s 1988 documentary draws on 14 hours of prime Monk footage shot by Christian Blackwood in 1967 and 1968 (“like finding the Dead Sea Scrolls of Jazz\,” enthused producer Bruce Ricker. Featuring Monk on tour in Europe\, playing in clubs\, recording\, and in interviews\, the film is supplemented with more recent interviews with band mates and the Baroness Nica de Koenigswarter\, among others.

SUMMARY:Kasador at Portside Pub
DESCRIPTION:Kasador takes the stage in Vancouver at the Portside Pub on April 18th as part of their cross-Canada tour promoting their new EP! \nOver the past two years\, the Kingston\, Ontario band released their second full-length\, 2023’s Youth\, toured across Canada and the U.S.\, and went from a three-piece to a four-piece outfit. They hit major streaming milestones\, won awards for their music videos\, been getting regular spins at XM radio\, and scored spots on national Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts—the sort of success every rock band dreams of. \nBut as much as they’re interested in success\, Kasador — vocalist/guitarist Cameron Wyatt\, guitarist Thomas Draper\, bassist Boris Baker\, and drummer Stephen Adubofuor — are interested in simply being a great rock and roll band in a time when connection\, friction\, and unpredictability are whittled away in favor of algorithmically dictated sameness. What is left when everything feels and looks and sounds good? Why do we idolize the rich assholes picking our pockets? \n‘Golden’\, ‘Cut It’ and ‘Revolution No.10’ —undoubtedly the heaviest music Kasador has released to date — is a taste of a new collection of 10 songs to be released in 2025\, across two EPs. Recorded at the Bathouse Recording Studio with engineer Nyles Spencer and written with a group of friends and longtime collaborators\, the tracks evidence a new era for Kasador: More than ever\, they’re committed to loud\, catchy\, confrontational guitar music as a weapon against corporate power\, plutocracy\, and our great collective numbness. This is the clearest and most direct they’ve ever been. Uncoincidentally\, it’s also the most fed-up they’ve ever been\, and they’re not pulling any punches. \nKasador has perfected their sound with this new material: It’s tender and carefully considered\, but also raw and wild and burnt around the edges\, a sonic and compositional thumbprint that nods to classic and alternative rock history while pushing into something new\, something exciting.

SUMMARY:VIFF Live | Zappostrophe + Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Time to fly your freak flag and jump into Frank Zappaland. A prodigious and prolific talent\, Zappa (1940-1993) composed\, recorded and produced more than 60 albums; music that brought to rock the complexity and sophistication of classical composition\, drawing on jazz\, blues\, pop and music concrete\, but leavened with a surreal and satiric wit. \nAhead of his time\, Zappa also directed music videos and the feature 200 Motels (with Tony Palmer)\, a free-form rock tour riff with Keith Moon as a hot nun and Ringo Starr playing a dwarf Zappa that was shot on videotape in just 10 days. It’s a cult curio that revels in its own sense of possibility. Before the movie\, enjoy a set of Zappa tunes resurrected and reimagined by the electrifying Zappostrophe\, an eclectic 8-piece band who channel surf FZ’s discography. \nBlair Fisher – vocals / trumpet / flute / keys\nBlair Lewis – guitar / synths / vocals / rubber chicken\nLJ Mounteney – vocals / kazoo\nNick Apivor – percussion / vocals\nGuenter Schulz – guitar\nCole Tinney – keyboards\nBrent Gubbels – bass\nJason Overy – drums

We gather every third Saturday of the month from 11am-1pm at the Elm Park Fieldhouse (5837 Larch Street)\, and take a walk around the neighbourhood to listen and record the sounds and signals around us. Rain or shine\, we will loosely gather at the Elm Park Fieldhouse around 11am and begin the walk closer to 11:30. \nWith FIELD TRIP\, our ears are the guide\, listening through microphones and each other’s curiosities to discover the sounds that inhabit our neighborhood. No prior experience with field recording is necessary\, and you can use anything that captures or transmits sound—a radio\, an old Zoom recorder\, even your phone! We suggest bringing your own pair of headphones\, wired\, if you can. \nPatchbay will have some gear to share. Meetups are loosely guided\, but not prescriptive—let’s take a walk together 🙂 \nCoffee and donuts provided! \nPlease fill out the registration form so we can get to know you better!
