Seeing the Mountains: Traditional Chinese Paintings by Jiangang Su
May 15 - June 6
FREELipont Gallery once again teams up with Vancouver-based artist Jiangang Su to hold a Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition in the summer of 2024, providing audiences and collectors in the Greater Vancouver area with an opportunity to learn and collect traditional Chinese artworks.
“Stone” is an important aesthetic object in Chinese traditional culture. Taihu stone is a stone with unique beauty. It is the beauty created by the uncanny workmanship of nature and contains the curious feelings of the literati. The phenomenon of appreciation of strange stones existed in the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, and the appreciation of strange stones reached a new climax in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.) To this day, stone appreciation has always held an irreplaceable place in the hearts of literati.
Seeing the Mountains is based on the theme of scholars admiring stones. The method of construction using brush and ink is expressed in the form of tea scroll hangings to create an elegant atmosphere in the study room. The calligraphy content of the exhibition includes a simple and square official script and an exquisite fan-shaped regular script that is full of Jiangnan literati feelings.
Jiangang Su is an artist of classical Chinese painting and calligraphy based in Vancouver. He is known for his gongbi-style paintings, versatile calligraphy styles, and seal carving.
