Novel synopsis: Gideon’s life unravels when his father, Quaker turned evangelical pastor, uproots the family to revive a dying church. When his father coopts him to pastor the church, Gideon rebels, escaping into pop music, delinquent friends, and the arms of a Native American girl, a romance his father firmly rejects. He eventually goes back to his old home to discover unsettling truths of his past. Finally, he must face the Viet Nam draft and a choice that threatens love and life.
