2024 TAIWANfest Vancouver: Hope Talk

August 31 @ 12:00 pm - September 2 @ 6:00 pm

How did the Hokkien people survive abroad four hundred years ago, when the Europeans began arriving in Asia? What does it mean to be Hakka today, around the world? How does Spanish flamenco dance reflect the souls of the Taiwanese?

Join TAIWANfest in exploring the historical connections between Taiwan and the world. With a series of talks from Taiwanese professors, writers, musicians, and more, open your minds and discover new sides to culture that you’ve never considered before!

Historian Fabio Lee will take us back to the 17th century, tracing through the daily lives of the Hokkien people as they interacted with Europeans. Writer Vivian Chang will share stories that will break through stereotypes of Hakka women around the world, following the migration of the Hakka community through Asia to contemporary tales of today. Lead singer of Taiwanese band Lilium, I-Shuo Lin, will share the intricate craft of creating a new era of Taiwanese songs that incorporates traditional and contemporary sound. Mother and daughter Lian Ho and Hsueh Yu-Hsien will dialogue about how flamenco forged their life path and taught them about community.
